Akwa Ibom is a state in Nigeria. It is located in the coastal south-Southern part of the country, The State is bordered on the east by Cross River State, on the west by Rivers State and Abia State, and on the South by the Atlantic Ocean and Cross River State again. Akwa Ibom is made up of 27 local government areas, with Uyo as the capital city. Its major towns include Uyo, Eket, Ikot Abasi, Oron, Etinam, Abak, and Ikot Ekpene. As the third largest producer of crude oil in Nigeria.
Akwa Ibom State is one of most important economic resource bases of the Nation. It was formerly a part of the South-Eastern state within the old Eastern Region of Nigeria. Following the 1976 state creation, it became part of Cross River State. Further restructuring of the Nigerian Federation saw the birth of Akwa Ibom as a state in the Nigerian polity; precisely on the 23rd of September 1987.
Akwa Ibom is one of Nigeria s 36 states with a population of over 5 million people. It was created in 1987 from the former Cross River State and is currently the highest oil and gas producing state in the country. The state s capital is Uyo with over 500,000 inhabitants . Akwa Ibom has an airport (Akwa Ibom International Airport) AKIA and two major sea ports on the Atlantic Ocean with a proposed construction of a world class seaport Ibaka (Oron Nation)Seaport. Along with English, the main languages spoken here are Ibibio, Annang, and Oron languages.


  • Culture
    The numerous traditional cults, secret societies, oracles, mythology, folklore and festivals, along with modifications imposed by the Christian religion, have combined to produce a great variety of beliefs and religious practices. Colourful masquerades include ekpo, ekoncf, iborrf, ekpe and oborf. Except during important state occasions such as the funeral of prominent citizens or the installation of traditional rulers, these masquerades appear on the streets mostly towards the end of the farming year, that is during harvests.
  • Climate
    The climate of Akwa lbom State is characterised by two seasons, namely, the wet or rainy season and the dry season because of the effects of the Maritime and the Continental Tropical air masses. In the south and central parts of the State, the wet or rainy season lasts for about eight months but towards the far north, it is slightly less. The rainy season begins about March-April and lasts until mid-November. Akwa lbom State receives relatively higher rainfall totals than other parts of southern Nigeria. The total annual rainfall varies from 4000mm along the coast to 2000mm inland.
